The Truth about Your Toothbrush

tooth brush

Oral care is an essential and sensitive component of personal hygiene. Unfortunately, though, we don’t give much thought to it. Out of all the things we use to maintain the health of our mouth, our toothbrush is by far the most important. Just because we use it to clean our teeth is by no means an indication that it is clean itself. Here are some things you should know about your toothbrush.

Your Toothbrush is a Germ Magnet

A recent study conducted at the University of Manchester revealed that an uncovered toothbrush can be a breeding ground for bacteria and can actually host up to a hundred million individual bacteria cells. Bacteria loves a moist environment to multiply so make sure that your toothbrush is in a dry place after you use it. Don’t let it lie on the sink tray or counter; keep it up right where it can dry off.

Toothbrush Holders

If you place your toothbrush holder close to the toilet, DON’T! Every time you flush the toilet, a whole bacteria army is released into the air. Also, toothbrush holders are home to whole colonies of bacteria and usually get overlooked while the bathroom is being cleaned. Make sure to wash them out and let them dry properly before placing in the bathroom again.

Let it Go

What’s the best way to get rid of all the bacteria? Replacing your toothbrush regularly. Now there is no “set in stone” way to define regularly but the American Dental Association recommends tossing it out every 3-4 months. However, if you notice the bristles get worn out or if you recently recovered from an illness, replace it.

Sharing is NOT Caring

In the case of toothbrushes, and maybe roll-on deodorants, sharing is not caring at all. Sharing a toothbrush can transfer saliva, germs, and bacteria which can cause tooth decay and other infections. So even if it’s your spouse or your immediate family member, do not share your toothbrush with them.

Remember: Oral care is important. Keeping your toothbrush clean and germ-free is more important. Don’t hesitate to share this precious info with your family and friends!
